VA medicaid battle affecting local healthcare providers

Written by  Katie Love | WSLS

The state battle over expanding medicaid is affecting local healthcare providers.

The Free Clinic of Franklin County is re-thinking how it will provide services to the uninsured population.

Executive Director Alise Culbertson says 85% of people in Franklin County would qualify for medicaid.

"You have to imagine trying to run a business where you're not quite sure where your funding is going to come from," Executive Director Alise Culbertson says.

Culberston says it also affects donations coming in because people think the clinic will be receiving money from the government.

Carilion Clinic will also be affected if medicaid doesn't pass. Carilion Clinic Vice President says the Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital will see a federal cut in $1 million of reimbursements next year. While Carilion Clinic as a whole, will suffer a $3.1 million cut in the next year.

The Free Clinic did celebrate it's grand-opening Tuesday. The new facility is thanks to $1 million donation from Guy and Betty Beatty.

The couple are from northern Virginia, but had family in Franklin County.

Guy has passed away, but Betty said he always wanted to help people who couldn't afford medical care.
