PDA Metro San Diego Endorses Vickie Butcher in CA 52

March 3, 2008, San Diego, CA

On Thursday, Feb.12, members of the PDA Metro San Diego chapter met at Giovanni's in San Diego to consider the endorsement of Vickie Butcher who is running for Congress in District 52.

Vickie generated much excitement among those present as she spoke against the war and for universal health care, election reform, and ending poverty. She plans to join the Congressional Progressive Caucus next January.

Vickie easily won the endorsement and is genuinely pleased to have the Metro chapter's support. A true progressive in every sense, she faces three candidates in the CA 52 Democratic primary on June 3, none of whom sought the endorsement.

California's Congressional District 52 is in transition from red to blue, with a mix of very conservative voters, moderates and progressives. Randy "Duke" Cunningham's old pal and war hawk, Duncan Hunter, currently holds the seat. Hunter is retiring this year, and his son Duncan D. Hunter is running in the Republican primary to fill his father's open seat.

Vickie's strongest Democratic challenger is Mike Lumpkin, a former U.S. Navy Seal who takes positions adverse to PDA's progressive agenda. He spoke at our December meeting and appears to be closely aligned with the junior Hunter's militarism. As such, they offer the voters of District 52 no clear choice. Vickie is a distinct alternative to Hunter and Lumpkin, championing a progressive platform which is gaining resounding support all over the country today.

Vickie has received a number of endorsements, including those of Reps. Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Diane Watson. On Friday, Feb. 29, PDA advisory board member Rep. Diane Watson will be the featured guest at Vickie's fundraiser in La Jolla from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Suggested contribution $500-$2,300. RSVP: 619-229-0357). In addition, her position on immigration reform has resulted in strong support from the Latino community, where her outreach has helped drive up voter registration.

Vickie is thrilled to have the coattails of Barack Obama to ride in a district in need of inspiration. As far as this chapter is concerned,Vickie is inspiration enough!
