PDA Metro San Diego Proudly Endorses Mike Copass in CA 53

March 7, 2008, San Diego, CA

On February 29, a day that comes only once in four years, PDA Metro San Diego had something big to celebrate. A member of our chapter, “favorite son” Mike Copass, asked for our endorsement. Comfortable and at home, but animated and urgent as he shared his deep concerns for our country, Mike convinced the CA 53 members he merited their votes, and he won our unanimous endorsement. Mike is very well-liked and respected, but there was greater reason for the vote.

Mike had left the position of CA 53 CD point person to launch an insurgency campaign against Democratic incumbent Susan Davis. Davis is a member of the New Democrat Coalition, whose core issues are “economic growth, national security, personal responsibility, and technology development.” Progressive? Not very. Since her initial vote against the invasion of Iraq, Davis has dearly disappointed progressives. She's downright chilly toward impeachment, and noncommittal on issues important to us.

Efforts by Mike and other constituents and activists to bring Davis into the progressive fold had failed. Concluding that the country can't wait for her conversion, Mike entered the primary with dedication and verve.

Mike enthusiastically embraced the Progressive Challenge and its agenda. A mere glance at his campaign website demonstrates that he doesn't flinch from stating where he stands and what he pledges to do. He is eager and anxious to join the Progressive Caucus, the Out of Iraq Caucus, and to Co-Sponsor HR 676 and other progressive legislation. Mike welcomes the chance to give CA 53 voters the opportunity to flex their progressive muscles.

With a cosmopolitan population, CA 53 covers most of the beach communities of San Diego, and then stretches eastward from mid-town. Voter registration by October revealed 41% were Democrats, 29% Republicans, and 30% Decline to State.

CA 53 is ready for a progressive challenge. Mike Copass is ready to provide it.
