PDA Endorses Bob Filner in California's 51st Congressional District

Tuesday, April 11, 2006--The PDA San Diego Central Chapter has endorsed Bob Filner for reelection in California's 51st Congressional District.

Bob has been a steadfast fighter for the people of his district since he was first elected to Congress in 1992. He has led the fight against the war in Iraq since 2002, and is a member of the Out of Iraq Caucus. Bob believes we should withdraw our troops right away.

He has fought for veterans' rights and benefits as a senior member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, helping end the "veterans disability tax" and authoring the Military Survivors Equity Act. See his article in The Nation (Jan. 19, 2006, edition) on veterans healthcare and his views on national healthcare. He supports a single-payer healthcare plan.

Bob believes we must have publicly supported elections, redistricting by commission and that electronic voting machines must have paper verification.

Bob is strongly behind our workers and our environment. He received an 89% rating on his environmental voting record. He is working to facilitate raising sugar cane to make ethanol in the Imperial Valley, helping the environment and creating jobs there at the same time. He voted against NAFTA and CAFTA because he saw that they did not protect the environment or workers' rights.

Our nation's immigrants need not fear him. He has found compassionate ways to assist immigrant families, while supporting sensible and efficient border protection.

Bob favors the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate the Bush administration's illegal wiretapping, and he would support a resolution of impeachment against President Bush for lying us into the Iraq War, illegally wiretapping Americans, and condoning tax theft by multinational corporations.
