On October 14, Tim Carpenter, executive director of PDA, who lives with his wife Barbara Considine and daughters Sheila, 9, and Julia, 7, in Northampton, Massachusetts, was honored by the Northampton Democratic City Committee as “Democrat of the Year.” The choice of Tim for this hometown honor spoke volumes about a man whose national involvement is always combined with his grassroots activism and commitment to local issues.

Lisa Baskin, a pioneer in Democratic Party progressive politics in Northampton who introduced Tim said, “Tim is a man committed to the broadest public interests in his work for peace and justice, while doing childcare and signature-gathering simultaneously.”

And Massachusetts state representative Steven Kocot said of Tim, “What inspires me about Tim is his willingness to step away from that which is comfortable, to do what is right.”

In his remarks to the gathering Tim said, “I accept this award on behalf of all grassroots activists who are sometimes seen as outside agitators and then become integral parts of the Democratic Party family.”

Also in attendance at the meeting of over 150 progressives, a dozen PDAers, and local party stalwarts were Congressman Richard Neal, State Senator Stan Rosenberg, former Northampton Mayor Mary Ford, and PDA National Board Vice Chair Steve Shaff.

Co-honoree Christina Citino works with Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts, a parallel local organization.
