PDA first encountered John Nirenberg of Brattleboro VT at an Impeachment Town Hall meeting at Dartmouth College four days before his departure to Boston's historic Faneuil Hall, where he began a trek to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's office in Washington D.C. He is calling for impeachment to be put back “on” the table and will deliver a petition signed by impeachment supporters that he has collected along his route. His effort is entitled “March in My Name,” and Nirenberg expects to take forty days to complete the march, with stops along the way including the Statue of Liberty and Independence Hall.
As he collects signatures, Nirenberg will urge citizens to speak out on the Constitutional crisis we face and why it is vital to impeach Bush and Cheney. He plans to arrive in Washington D.C. in mid-January.
"We voted for change in 2006", Nirenberg said, "but the Democrats aren't doing what we elected them to do. The war goes on; the torture continues. Torture! Can you believe we actually discuss waterboarding, and the legality of beating prisoners just short of organ failure and death? What has happened to this country? And why have we let it? The Bush/Cheney administration must be held accountable for their high crimes and misdemeanors and their complete disregard for the U.S. Constitution. That's why I'm marching from Faneuil Hall in Boston to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office in Washington, D.C.
"I hope some people will march with me--even for a mile or two--but I hope everyone will march whenever they can and go to Speaker Pelosi's office and to House Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers' office to tell them it is unacceptable that no one is holding this administration accountable for its disregard of the Constitution and for its egregious law breaking."
Nirenberg will blog and upload videos to his website so those who can't join him can follow his progress and can join in the ongoing discussion on his website.
PDA encourages our community to get out and support Nirenberg along the way. Besides moral support, Nirenberg will need logistical and financial support. PDA impeachment activists are organizing a rally along the coast in Southern Connecticut--probably Westport on Dec 15 on the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge in the center of town. Watch his blog for information on this event.
