Congresswoman Speier: The Deadline for Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment Should be Removed

Written by  Bill Silverfarb

Congresswomen Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo/Redwood City) issued the following statement today after offering a joint resolution to remove the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA was introduced into every Congress between 1923 and 1972, when it finally passed and was sent to the states for ratification upon three/fourths approval. Congresswoman Speier’s joint resolution has 109 original co-sponsors.

“It’s almost unbelievable that in the 21st century women do not have the same equal protections under the Constitution that men do. The Equal Rights Amendment was introduced in Congress back in 1923, and unreasonably stipulated that states had only 10 years to ratify it. This arbitrary deadline is counterproductive, and an antiquated impediment to equality.

“Only three more state Legislatures need to join the 35 others that have already approved the ERA and I’m confident that will happen in the coming years but a deadline is simply not necessary – it will be a setback to equality.”

The joint resolution is supported by: 9 to 5, Alice Paul Institute, American Association of University Women (AAUW), Business and Professional, Women's Foundation (BPW), Center for Advancement of Public Policy (CAPP), Center for Women's Policy Studies, ERA Action, ERA Now, Federally Employed Women, Feminist Majority Hadassah, The Gray Panthers, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc., National Association of Social Workers, National Congress of Black Women, National Council of Jewish Women, National Council of Women's Organization- ERA Task Force, National Organization for Women (NOW), National Women's Law Center, National Women's Political Caucus, NWPC-Florida, NWPC-Missouri, Progressive Democrats of America, Secular Woman, Washington Office, United Methodist Women, UniteWomen.org, We Are Woman, WomenMatterUseYourPower.com, Women Rise Up Now , and YWCA.

Update: Andrea Miller - HJ Res 113 was introduced with 110 cosponsors.

Senator Ben Cardin held a briefing this afternoon on the Equal Rights Amendment. Special panel included: Bettina Hager, Moderator, Co-Chair NCWO ERA Task Force Programs Director, National Women's Political Caucus, Roberta W. Francis, Co-Chair NCWO ERA Task Force, Resource Experts, Congressional Research Service Kenneth R. Thomas, Legislative Attorney, Thomas H. Neale, Specialist in American National Government, Chitra Panjabi, Vice President Membership, National Organization for Women, Dr. Elise Gould, Director of Health Policy Research, Economic Policy Institute, Andrea Miller, Co-Executive Director, Progressive Democrats of America and Eleanor Smeal, President, Feminist Majority.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier is proud to represent California’s 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of San Francisco and San Mateo counties. She is a senior member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee (HASC). In her role on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the Congresswoman is a ranking member on the Subcommittee on Energy Policy, Health Care, and Entitlements and serves on the Subcommittee on National Security. She serves on the Readiness Subcommittee and the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee on HASC and is a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. Congresswoman Speier was appointed to serve as a Senior Whip for the Democratic caucus in the 113th Congress.

Learned about Taj (letter to the editor)

I was anxious to attend the League of Women Voters Candidate Night because like so many other people in the new 11th District, I knew little about either of the major party candidates. I sat with more than 100 other voters and waited for Kerry Bentivolio to arrive.

With the open seat, Dr. Taj has a more than favorable chance to win. His opponent is Kerry Bentivolio, reindeer rancher, failed business owner and part-time actor who has never held elected office. He has strong ties to libertarian financiers and Tea Party activists but has been ostracized by the Republican Party establishment, having taken large donations from Liberty for All Super PAC, affiliated with Ron Paul.

He may be a Democrat in a largely Republican town, but don't tell that to Canton voters.

Dr. Syed Taj finished fourth out of six candidates in 2008 to win a seat on Canton's Board of Trustees -- the first Democrat elected to the board in recent memory and the only Democrat on the seven-member board.

We also talk economics and tax policy. We can’t just continue to cut our way to prosperity, Taj says. We continue to fire public employees, he says, and that not only impacts quality of life, but it negatively impacts consumer spending.

The sudden resignation of Rep. Thad McCotter led to a tumultuous Republican primary in Michigan's 11th District, but the fallout may also mean a competitive general election for a seat thought until recently to be safely in the GOP column. At least, that's what Syed Taj is counting on.
