Bernie Sanders bound for Iowa

WASHINGTON – First, he traveled to New Hampshire. Now he's bound for Iowa.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is hitting all the familiar campaign stops as he considers whether to run for president in 2016.

Sanders will be the main dinner speaker on May 17 at the "Hall of Fame Dinner for 2014" hosted by Democrats in Clinton County, Iowa. The event is described as the year's main county Democratic fundraiser.

On Thursday, the Progressive Democrats of America will hold its first organizing meeting in Iowa for the "Draft Bernie Sanders for President" campaign, according to several Iowa newspapers. Attendees may sign a petition urging Sanders to run as a Democrat, volunteer to work on his campaign or buy tickets for his Clinton County speech. The petition is posted on the group's web site.

Sanders, who spoke last month at a New Hampshire town hall meeting, has said he would need a strong grassroots movement backing him if he runs. He hasn't said if he would run as an independent or a Democrat.

Sanders will participate in other events this weekend with Progressive Democrats of America at First Churches of Northampton in Massachusetts. On Friday night, he will take questions at a public event with Nation Magazine and MSNBC contributor John Nichols focused on the "Remaking of American Politics." On Saturday, he will speak at an event honoring the memory of PDA national director Tim Carpenter. Speakers at the all-day event will discuss ways to build the progressive movement.

Learned about Taj (letter to the editor)

I was anxious to attend the League of Women Voters Candidate Night because like so many other people in the new 11th District, I knew little about either of the major party candidates. I sat with more than 100 other voters and waited for Kerry Bentivolio to arrive.

With the open seat, Dr. Taj has a more than favorable chance to win. His opponent is Kerry Bentivolio, reindeer rancher, failed business owner and part-time actor who has never held elected office. He has strong ties to libertarian financiers and Tea Party activists but has been ostracized by the Republican Party establishment, having taken large donations from Liberty for All Super PAC, affiliated with Ron Paul.

He may be a Democrat in a largely Republican town, but don't tell that to Canton voters.

Dr. Syed Taj finished fourth out of six candidates in 2008 to win a seat on Canton's Board of Trustees -- the first Democrat elected to the board in recent memory and the only Democrat on the seven-member board.

We also talk economics and tax policy. We can’t just continue to cut our way to prosperity, Taj says. We continue to fire public employees, he says, and that not only impacts quality of life, but it negatively impacts consumer spending.

The sudden resignation of Rep. Thad McCotter led to a tumultuous Republican primary in Michigan's 11th District, but the fallout may also mean a competitive general election for a seat thought until recently to be safely in the GOP column. At least, that's what Syed Taj is counting on.
