TPP Webinar Tonight - Rep. Jim McGovern Special Guest

Written by

Our special guest tonight is Rep. Jim McGovern. Rep. McGovern has long been a friend to working people, an advocate for Fair Trade, and a champion for economic equality. We'll talk about the future of trade agreements, and get his take on the current state of TPP and Fast Track leading into Congress' recess week and the next round of TPP talks. Join the Webinar at http://www.anymeeting.com/moveforjustice1

Kian Frederick from Public Citizen will be with us first, to address likely timing of a “Smart Track” bill by Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden. He tested the waters in hearings last week but we don't know what he's proposing so for now we're in "watch and wait" mode. We will continue to oppose any form of "Fast Track" – a process used to push secret backroom business deals through Congress with little debate and no amendments. Because you've asked, we will also touch on the recently leaked Trade in Services Agreement (TISA) text.

Emilianne Slaydon from TPP Media March will share details for this Tuesday's TPP Twitter storm (spoiler alert: the theme is "The World Trade Cup!") Tweets are up 24-7 – click to copy and paste: bit.ly/TPPMediaMarch

The Battle for Public Opinion Rages on: PDA's Co-Executive Director Andrea Miller will bring us up to date on "Countdown to Coverage," our fight to get mainstream newspapers and other media to tell the truth about "free trade."

Our CWA allies have a plan for countering the latest TPP "Love Letter" from the Denver Post editorial, and Dave Felice with CWA should be on hand to fill us in – and encourage other cities to follow this example.

PLUS: We'll share a link to a new activist toolkit from Public Citizen for your July 4 recess week actions (it goes live Monday afternoon - just in time you're your district office meetings Tuesday through Thursday!)

Join "Countdown to Coverage" Share TPP with your Daily Newspaper

CWA devised a simple plan for which they were uniquely suited: drag TPP out of the shadows and into the light - one city at a time - using a medium they understand intimately: Daily Newspapers!

Two CWA members - Dave Felice in Denver, CO and Madelyn Elder in Portland, OR have started the ball rolling. We just need to keep up the momentum leading up to a big day of petition deliveries.

Step 1 is to send an Op-Ed to your Daily Newspaper.

Write Your Local Newspaper and say We Can Create Jobs Now

Congress has a solution for creating jobs and job training programs but the newspapers never talk about that. Government isn't broken and government can create jobs. Make sure that people in your community know that this is possible.

Step 1 is to send an Op-Ed to your Daily Newspaper.

Sign the Petition - Sen. Sanders Run as a Democrat in 2016

Hand Deliver a Letter to your Rep on Jobs

If your Representative is not currently a cosponsor of HR 1000 they may not completely understand how important full employment is to your community; click on your state at the bottom of this page to see all the cosponsors in your state. Nothing sends a stronger message to a Congressional member than a personal visit to a district office by a voter with a written request. Phone calls and emails are incredibly important but nothing gets attention like a personal visit. Our Educate Congress page has information and a sample letter. Print the letter, sign it, deliver it.
