Whether we call it single-payer, improved and expanded Medicare for all, universal care, or health care human rights, achieving access to a single standard of high quality care for all without financial barrier is our ultimate goal. Building momentum is our mission. From the inception of our Healthcare Not Warfare campaign several years ago, PDA has been a leader in the movement for health care justice.
The passage of the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare was and continues to be a significant event. Though it is still unfolding, PDA members know, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid admitted this past week: “We’re far from having something that’s going to work forever.”
We will achieve our goal when we apply persistent and progressive pressure on our legislators as was evidenced when PDA joined PNHP, Labor Campaign for Single Payer, Public Citizen and Healthcare-Now! July 31st in Washington for meetings with legislators on the heels of the 48th anniversary of Medicare (our single payer for senior care).
We supported co-sponsorship by every Congressional member office of HR 676, expanded and improved Medicare for all. We joined leaders on this issue, like Bernie Sanders, on the House Triangle for a rally and heard the economic analysis of Dr. Gerald Friedman detailing more than a half- trillion dollars in savings achievable by bringing everyone into a universal system, HR676.
Now, as we await the reintroduction of Sen. Sander’s Senate bill and Representative Jim McDermott’s legislative remedy, the American Health Security Act of 2013, let’s take action in our home Congressional districts to bring representatives back to a true progressive solution. We’ve created a list of former HR 676 supporters and members we believe should be supporting HR676 without fail. We can no longer let folks whisper their support, so we must demand they exhibit the courage of their convictions that everyone is worthy of care!
