Obama endorses John Conyers

Written by  Kathleen Gray - Detroit Free Press

U.S. Rep. John Conyers’ re-election bid got a boost today when President Barack Obama endorsed him, according to a news release from Conyers’ campaign.

Conyers is running in the newly redrawn 13th District and will face a handful of Democratic challengers, including state senators Bert Johnson of Highland Park and Glenn Anderson of Westland, state Rep. Shanelle Jackson of Detroit and Detroit attorney Godfrey Dillard.

“After a campaign focused on economic development and job creation, my first task back in Congress will be to work with the president and other members of Congress to get our economy back on the right track,” Conyers said in a statement released this afternoon.

Officials with the Obama campaign confirmed the endorsement.

“Congressman John Conyers Jr. is a tireless champion for all of southeastern Michigan’s working families, especially the many struggling to get by,” said Obama, according to Conyers’ news release.

It hasn’t always been so nice between them – back in 2009, Conyers said in a radio interview that the president had failed to show enough leadership on health care and had been “bowing down to every nutty right-wing proposal” during the debate.

“I’m getting tired of saving Obama’s can in the White House,” Conyers added.
