Bothwell adds PDA to list of endorsements

Progressive Democrats of America have added NC 11 congressional candidate Cecil Bothwell to their national slate. Bothwell joins other PDA endorsees including candidates Norman Solomon (D-CA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Winona Benally Baldenegro (D-AZ), Wayne Powell (D-VA), Eric Griego (D-NM), and incumbents Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD), Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA). Bothwell said, "I am proud to be in such good company!"

Bothwell was jubilant after the call. "The progressive caucus in the House of Representatives is large and growing, it now includes about 100 members. This stands in stark contrast to the dwindling ranks of the Blue Dogs, a coalition that is losing influence with each election cycle."

Bothwell continued, " The path toward the future is clear. The American people are fed up with Republicans and their allies who vote against women, against health care, against earned benefit programs including Social Security and Medicare, and who promise jobs but instead deliver tax cuts to the wealthy."

PDA was formed during the 2004 Democratic National Convention by a group representing a wide swath of party leaders determined to shift the national conversation back from it's talk-radio-driven rightward tilt. A thousand activists—many from the presidential campaigns of Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich—gathered in Roxbury. Mass., to hear talks by Dean, Kucinich, Reps. John Conyers and Barbara Lee, Tom Hayden, Granny D, Medea Benjamin, and many others. It has been active in every election year since its start, conducting national phone banks, fundraisers, conferences and Get Out The Vote campaigns.

The PDA ratification is just the latest in a string of Bothwell endorsements from national and regional organizations. This week he placed first in a national poll by Democracy for America, to secure a full scholarship to Netroots Nation, the largest annual gathering of the progressive community. (This year to be held in Providence. June 7-10.) Other endorsements this week include Asheville PARC, a regional environmenal and social activist organization and Enlighten the Vote, a national organization focussed on church-state separation. The Asheville chapter of the National Organziation for Women has also given Bothwell's candidacy the nod.

In January Bothwell was endorsed by Blue America, an organization founded in 2006 to help more progressives to overcome the massive financial advantage corporately backed conservatives always have over candidates who fight for ordinary families instead of special interests. Blue America's specialty is generating hundreds of thousands of dollars from individual, small-dollar donors.
