Former Illinois Congressman Phil Hare Endorses David Gill

Written by

Hare said Illinois families need more progressive voices in Congress. “I trust David to be a passionate voice for middle- class people,” Hare commented. “I know David will protect the rights of workers. And who better than an ER doctor like David Gill to block the Republicans’ attempts to end Medicare as we know it?”

Former Congressman Hare said he wanted to move forward with his endorsement now even though a small number of provisional and absentee votes remain to be counted before the Primary election results will be certified. Hare said he agrees with David Gill and his primary opponent that all votes should be counted.

“With so few absentee and provisional ballots outstanding, and many of them coming from Champaign County where David dominated with 75% of the vote, it’s hard to see how the results from primary night are going to change,” Hare stated. “I think Democrats can all agree that the potential distraction of a costly, drawn-out recount process is counter-productive to our shared goal of defeating anti-labor, anti-choice Republican Tim Johnson in November.”

Hare invited his fellow Democrats, his friends in labor and allies in the progressive movement to join him in supporting David Gill now. “We need to unite and move forward to help David run a smart, aggressive campaign,” Hare concluded. “Tim Johnson’s been in politics for 41 years. It’s time for him to go. If we all work together, we can help David Gill defeat him and put the 13th District in the Democratic column in November.”

“I’m honored to have Congressman Hare’s strong endorsement in this race,” David Gill stated. “I’m ready to go to Washington and fight hard for the things Phil Hare and Lane Evans were so passionate about in Congress: decent jobs, better heath care and taking care of our veterans.”

Dr. David Gill is an emergency room physician from Bloomington, Illinois, who has never held been elected office. He is running against Republican Tim Johnson who is seeking his seventh term in Congress.
