NEW YORK -- Organizers of the People’s Climate March announced this afternoon that the New York City Police Department has approved a route for the march on September 21 through the center of Manhattan. The march will begin at Columbus Circle, proceed over on 59th Street to 6th Avenue, down 6th Avenue to 42nd Street, then right on 42nd Street to 11th Avenue. The route passes by some of New York City’s most famous landmarks, from Rockefeller Center to Times Square.
Eddie Bautisa, Executive Director of the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance, had this to say in response to the route approval-“People are seeing this crisis unfold all around them, especially in low-income and communities of color. That’s why the People’s Climate March won’t only be the largest, but also the most diverse global day of action on climate change--from unions to immigrants to parents to students to communities of faith. Our message to anyone anywhere concerned about the way the climate crisis will impact our jobs, health, children and communities is simple: join us.”

The People’s Climate March is expected to be the largest march for climate action in world history, drawing major crowds to New York City for the weekend. Simultaneous events are now being planned in dozens of countries around the world, with major marches in London, Berlin, Paris, Delhi and beyond. More than 700 organizations have endorsed the effort--bringing together over 40 labor unions, including New York City’s largest, along with social justice campaigns, the world’s leading environmental groups, and many more.

The march is scheduled to take place just two days before President Obama and world leaders attend a historic Climate Summit at the United Nations.

Could This Tax on Wall Street Turn Back America’s Tide of Inequality?

How will you honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this April 4, the anniversary of his assassination? How about by demanding that Congress get out of Wall Street’s pocket? How about by letting your representative know that you support economic equality and a just distribution of wealth in America? As Dr. King himself said, “This is America’s opportunity to help bridge the gulf between the haves and the have-nots. The question is whether America will do it. There is nothing new about poverty. What is new is that we now have the techniques and the resources to get rid of poverty. The real question is whether we have the will.”

Simply put, the big idea behind the Robin Hood Tax is to generate hundreds of billions of dollars.  That money could provide funding for jobs to kickstart the economy and get America back on its feet. It could help save the social safety net here and around the world.  And it will come from fairer taxation of the financial sector.
