Our Anger, Ourselves

Mary Dore’s documentary, ‘She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry,’ reminds us of ’70s feminism’s daring and creativity

Relatively late in She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, Mary Dore’s documentary of Second Wave feminism, one woman makes a revealing statement: At the time they were organizing, neither she nor any of the radical women she worked with knew much about the history of the suffragettes. The women of the Second Wave were building a movement with no understanding of who had won them the right to vote.

The Supreme Court has declined to hear a petition to overturn a lower court’s ruling that a breastfeeding mother was not discriminated against and could not sue her employer. The woman’s suit was dismissed by a trial court, but activists say that one of the trial court’s findings — that breastfeeding-related firings aren’t sexist because men can lactate, too — is ridiculous. The ACLU’s Galen Sherwin wrote Monday that former Nationwide Insurance Company employee Angela Ames sued her the company after she returned from maternity leave to find she was unable to pump breast milk for her baby during the day.

#SOTU2015 #DemandERA White House Phone Blast

Please join us in supporting our President's bold agenda and in reminding him to "REMEMBER THE WOMEN" in his #SOTU address by vigorously supporting the movement to #RatifyERA in his remarks to the nation.

President Barack Obama is gearing up to come out swinging with a Progressive agenda that proves our #POTUS plans to make his last years in the White House count. Policies benefitting the 99%, not just the privileged few, are his top priority. Check out all things #SOTU2015 here:

We have his back as he moves these policies and we need and deserve his assurance that he has ours too.

The ERA is on the verge of being ratified in IL. Victory is hinging on a handful of votes being decided by Representatives who need to hear from their own constituents. We have a list of IL constituents who need to be called and asked to call their Reps. to tell them to vote YES on ERA ratification on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd. We need YOU to help make those calls. Please respond back, tell us how many calls you are willing to make between now and Monday evening as well as your preference for a paper list or computer. Thanks! This is truly the most important action we can take to move the ERA forward!

Oregon ERA draws a quiet campaign

Although it has not attracted the campaign money or public attention that other measures on the Nov. 4 ballot have, Measure 89 would write a guarantee of women’s rights into the Oregon Constitution.

Equal Rights Amendment

The ERA 3 State Strategy Issue Team is dedicated to ratifying the ERA in the timeliest manner possible—to finish what Dr. Alice Paul started 90 years ago. Our strategy is two-fold—removing the ERA ratification deadline on the national level by Educating Congress to support Joint Resolutions SJRES15 and HJRS113 while simultaneously organizing in targeted un-ratified states to gain the 3 additional required to make the ERA the 28th Amendment of the United States Constitution.
