Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs: Republicans Double Down on Job Cuts

Written by  Congressional Progressive Caucus | Press Release

Washington, D.C.Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed a Continuing Resolution that funds the government through September, but does nothing to save the hundreds of thousands of jobs that will be lost because of the sequester:

“America’s working families are already getting by on less and less, while oil companies continue to book record profits and millionaires get a tax break for buying yachts and jets. Republicans would rather see Americans lose the benefits they’ve earned than raise a single penny of revenue to invest in working families. Today’s funding bill shows once again that Republicans are relentless in their attacks on the middle class, resulting in thirty thousand children losing health care coverage, cuts to programs that help veterans find work and the loss of one million American jobs. Massive layoffs and furloughs are the exact opposite of what American families need.

“We can’t let working Americans pay for Republicans to protect the wealthy and big oil, which is why the CPC introduced a fair replacement to the sequester with the Balancing Act. If the Republicans won’t work with us to replace the sequester, we should repeal it entirely as proposed by Rep. Conyers  (D-MI) in H.R. 900 and spare working families. This will allow Congress to pass an appropriations bill that protects working families and the American economy. ”
