Counter-Inaugural Activities

Vol. 2, No. 1--Pre-Summit, January 2005

If you're coming to PDA's Progressive Democratic Summit in D.C., January 21st-23rd, consider coming a few days early to participate in the multitude of counter-inaugural activities going on that week. If you won't be in D.C. on January 20th, go to www.counter-inaugural.org to see what's being organized locally in your area.

Grassroots groups around the country have organized protests, creative demonstrations, and acts of civil disobedience during the January 20, 2005 Inauguration of George W. Bush. Activities and events begin the week before and will extend through the weekend after the Inauguration.

Organizers from a variety of groups are inviting people-of-conscience to gather in DC next week to stand against the Bush Administration. For those who can't make it to DC, local actions are being planned. In the wake of the second consecutive Presidential election marred by widespread disenfranchisement, progressive Americans have increasingly identified the Bush Administration as not only a threat to global peace, but also a corrupt, illegitimate imposition upon the people of the United States and the world.

"Americans of conscience must shun any president who so arrogantly shuns democracy, civil rights, the environment and the poor," said Morrigan Phillips of the DC Resistance Media Collective and the Mobilization for Global Justice. "We The People refuse to accept another four years of cronyism from Bush. He and his administration are unwelcome in the District of Columbia."

Counter-inaugural actions will feature a diversity of tactics, and will be organized by decentralized, autonomous groups. Organizers coordinate their efforts through a weekly, public, citywide spokescouncil, bringing together a broad swath of groups from the peace, anti-globalization, environmental, and labor movements; student groups; faith groups; federal PACs; artist collectives; and unaffiliated individuals.

A website has been established to orient the public to the various actions planned and to facilitate the organizing effort. For additional information about counter-inaugural events, activities, demonstrations, and other actions, please visit www.counter-inaugural.org.
