California State NewsVol. 2, No. 4--May 11, 2005On May 7, Progressive Democrats of the East Bay presented a panel on Senator Sheila Kuehl's health care bill SB 840 at their monthly general meeting. Speakers were Dr. Richard Quint, Emeritus, UCSF, California Physicians Alliance; Rachel Richman, Chief of Staff for Assemblymember Wilma Chan; and Don Bechler, chair, Health Care for All-SF. This event was co-sponsored by the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club. SB 840 would provide health care for all Californians without regard to pre-existing conditions. It would save the state $20 billion in the first year and would be paid from already existing payroll taxes. No new spending. SB 840 would eliminate the astounding 50% of bankruptcies due to medical expenses, and it would provide early treatment of conditions which when left unattended become worse and more expensive especially when treated in the emergency room.
