Norman Solomon Raises More Than $305,000 During 2011

Norman Solomon reported raising more than $305,000 in calendar year 2011 in his campaign for California’s North Coast Congressional District 2, spanning from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border.

Solomon, an independent, grassroots Democrat, achieved this impressive sum by attracting the broad base support of nearly 2,900 individual contributors with an average contribution of $105 each.  Additionally, all funds raised by Solomon can be utilized by his campaign for the June election, unlike some other candidates whose reliance on large sums from single donors legally requires their embargoing some of those funds for use only if they advance from the June 5 primary election.

Further, unlike some of his opponents in this race, Solomon has refused to take contributions from any corporate-backed PACs (political action committees) or well-heeled, corporate lobbyists.

“I am humbled by the support and trust so many people -- not corporations -- have put in me to serve as the North Coast’s representative in Congress,” declared Norman Solomon.  “You must be independent in how you get to Congress in order to be independent-minded in Congress,” continued Solomon.

Norman Solomon’s disciplined fundraising success comes after an impressive showing at last month’s endorsing conference of the California Democratic Party where Solomon was clearly the grassroots favorite of the voting delegates.  Solomon has also earned the support of former North Coast Congressman Dan Hamburg and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) among others.  Current Members of Congress endorsing Solomon include Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Raul Grijalva and Congressman John Conyers, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee.

Solomon’s campaign has already mobilized hundreds of volunteers and supporters, opened campaign offices, and deployed top-notch staff throughout the district working to get his message out and engage voters in a meaningful dialogue.  Thousands of district residents have turned out to see Norman Solomon on the campaign trail -- more than 2,000 alone during a four-county barnstorming trip last month with award-winning television host and commentator Phil Donahue.

“Some other candidates in this race will simply try to buy the North Coast’s seat in Congress, but they do so at their own peril,” said Tom Higgins, political consultant to the Solomon campaign.  “Norman Solomon is the independent, grassroots candidate who clearly has the momentum in this race. This, coupled with sufficient funds and a superior ground game, ensures Norman Solomon is the candidate who will win in both June and November,” concluded Higgins.

CWA devised a simple plan for which they were uniquely suited: drag TPP out of the shadows and into the light - one city at a time - using a medium they understand intimately: Daily Newspapers!

Two CWA members - Dave Felice in Denver, CO and Madelyn Elder in Portland, OR have started the ball rolling. We just need to keep up the momentum leading up to a big day of petition deliveries in January.

Hand Deliver a Letter to your Senators or Representative on the TPP

If your Senator(s) and/or Representative is not currently opposed to Fast Track, they may not completely understand all the implications. Nothing sends a stronger message to a Congressional member than a personal visit to a district office by a voter with a written request. Phone calls and emails are incredibly important but nothing gets attention like a personal visit. Our Educate Congress page has information and a sample letter. Print the letter, sign it, deliver it.
