Navajo Congressional Candidate Wenona Benally Baldenegro Reacts to Water Settlement Vote

Written by  Native News Network Staff

"Thursday's Navajo Nation Council vote on the proposed water compact marks a new chapter in our dealings with the federal government.

Congressional Candidate Wenona Benally Baldenegro, who seeking the Democratic Party's nomination in Arizona's First Congressional District and is a Navajo Nation citizen, issued the following statement on Friday on the vote by the 22nd Navajo Nation Council:

"Thursday's Navajo Nation Council vote on the proposed water compact marks a new chapter in our dealings with the federal government. Our Nation exercised true tribal sovereignty when the Council voted to affirm the people's decision to oppose the current settlement agreement. In doing so, we upheld the longstanding principle that to be a true Sovereign, a Nation must allow the people to be the ultimate decision makers on issues that will have a lasting impact on the future of our communities. Thursday's vote also re-emphasized to Congress their moral obligation and legal responsibility to support Indian tribal sovereignty and self-governance."

Benally Baldenegro was inside the Navajo Nation Council Chambers on Thursday during the debate and vote.

CWA devised a simple plan for which they were uniquely suited: drag TPP out of the shadows and into the light - one city at a time - using a medium they understand intimately: Daily Newspapers!

Two CWA members - Dave Felice in Denver, CO and Madelyn Elder in Portland, OR have started the ball rolling. We just need to keep up the momentum leading up to a big day of petition deliveries in January.

Hand Deliver a Letter to your Senators or Representative on the TPP

If your Senator(s) and/or Representative is not currently opposed to Fast Track, they may not completely understand all the implications. Nothing sends a stronger message to a Congressional member than a personal visit to a district office by a voter with a written request. Phone calls and emails are incredibly important but nothing gets attention like a personal visit. Our Educate Congress page has information and a sample letter. Print the letter, sign it, deliver it.
